Cecilia E. Penney, 98, of Cortland passed away on Thursday November 19, 2020 at Cortland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility. Born September 21, 1922 in Binghamton, Cecilia was the daughter of Joseph and Edna Gorzoch Mossakowski and was a Cortland resident for most of her life. Cecilia was educated in the Binghamton School district and the Wilson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1944.
Cecilia was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps faithfully serving her country as a Registered Nurse during World War ll. She then went on to be employed by the Cortland County Health Department, Cortland Memorial Hospital and then Cortland Nursing Home where she retired from in 1991.
Cecilia had a passion for reading, playing cards, and always selecting the perfect greeting card. Her big, cheerful smile brightened any room and her hugs were legendary. Her kindness and sense of humor enriched the lives of those who knew her.
A devout Catholic, Cecilia was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Survivors include, her son; Earl (Karen) Penney of Cortland and a daughter, Ramona (Stan) Clanton of Anaheim, California; grandchildren; Mary (Pete) Austerman, Kevin Penney and Kimberly (Christopher) Cronk and 7 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Cecilia was preceded in death by her siblings; Barbara, Alphonse and Martha as well as a grandson; Dana True, Jr. She also had two special friends; Albertina Lorenzo, who has predeceased Cecilia and also Eula Gokey who survives her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Zareski serving as celebrant. Prayers of committal will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostki Catholic Cemetery, Binghamton, N.Y. Contributions in Cecilia’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church 44 N.
