Carl A. Frahn, 93, of Homer, NY and formerly of Chatham, NJ, passed away on June 8, 2023.
Born in Hackensack NJ, Carl was raised with two younger sisters by his parents, William and Flora Frahn, in Pompton Lakes, NJ. After graduation from Pompton High in 1947, Carl attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ where in 1948 he helped found Gamma Sigma, a nonsectarian, interracial fraternity still active there today. Carl was a Henry Rutgers Scholar, and member of Phi Beta Kappa. Carl graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar in 1954. Carl’s practice of law, however, was delayed by his obligation to serve his country. After two years of Army service and having found Marlee Fredericks, the love of his life, they settled in Chatham for what would be over 50 years of legal and community service.
Along with his private law practice, Carl served as municipal prosecutor, attorney for the school district, and 27 years as Chatham Borough Attorney. He was counsel for and a director of, the Chatham Savings and Loan. A member of both the New Jersey State and Morris County Bar Associations, he served as a trustee of the county association and as a trustee and president of the Morris County Legal Aid Society.
Carl served as a lay leader and president of the board of trustees for the Chatham United Methodist Church. He was past president of the Chatham Rotary Club, trustee and chairman of the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts in Madison, NJ and a trustee of Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ.
Carl was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Marlee, his sister Carolyn and brother-in-law John Doremus. He is survived by his sister, Mary Lou (Don) Neilson and his children, Joelle (Jamie) Zimmerman, William “Bill” (Norma) Frahn, Charles “Chip” (Kelly) Frahn, and special niece, Lora Ann Vite. In addition, he leaves a wonderful legacy: Grandchildren: Paul (Kristen), Carl (Katherine) and Aaron (Natalee) Zimmerman; Corey (Tiffany) Bockus; Mark, Charles, and Spencer Frahn. Great grandchildren: Riley and Brendan Zimmerman; Caitlyn and Shane Frahn.
A celebration of life will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
