Obituary of Alice Marie Irwin Truscello


Alice Marie Irwin Truscello passed away quietly on May 17, 2024, in Cortland. She was 92 years old.

Born in 1931 to Iva Jean Munn Irwin and Earl Russell Irwin in Russia, NY, Alice attended Poland Central Schools where she played French horn and sang in the choir. She graduated from Utica College of Syracuse University as Valedictorian, earning a Bachelor of Science with highest honors. She met her future husband, James M. Truscello, in Poland, and they moved to Long Island in 1959. She lived in Wantagh for 42 years before moving with her husband to Monroe Township, NJ in 2001, and then to Walden Place in Cortland in 2018.

She taught mathematics in Poland Schools and horticulture at SUNY Farmingdale. She was a skilled gardener and great lover of nature. Her other interests included word games and puzzles, music, camping, swimming, and visiting national historic sites. She led a Cadet Girl Scout Troop, served on the Board of Trustees for the Wantagh Public Library, and was active in community affairs in Wantagh for many years. She was gracious, intelligent, and very much loved by her family, friends, and neighbors.

Alice was predeceased by her husband James in 2008, and by her 11 sisters and brothers:
Helen, Ethel, Esther, Adeline, Jane, Ada, Nelson, Stewart, Duane, Laura, and William.

Surviving are her three children, Roberta Truscello of Geneva, NY, Patricia Truscello of Delray Beach, FL, and James I. Truscello of Loveland, CO; five grandchildren, Gabrielle, Katelyn, Emma, Drake, and Grae; and three great-grandchildren.

Private arrangements have been entrusted to Riccardi Funeral Home of Cortland, NY. Those who choose to honor Alice’s memory in the form of a contribution are asked to please consider a donation to the New York State 4-H Foundation.
