NYSEG is alerting customers about several new scam attempts in the area involving impostors who claim to be employees or consultants of the company.
The first is a conventional phone scam, where unsolicited callers pose as utility officials and sometimes even forge a Caller ID or voicemail recording to make it appear legit.
What they’re looking for is your personal information or money, often alleging that you have bills past due and asking for payment through online gift cards like “Green Dot.”
NYSEG and other utilities do not seek information or payment this way. Customers are urged to never give out personal or account information to unsolicited callers.
Additionally, due to the ongoing inside gas meter inspections, officials say some bad actors have attempted to scam individuals by going door-to-door.
Questions about whether or not the visit is legitimate should be directed along with any other concerns to the NYSEG customer service line, (800)-572-1111.
