Members of the NYS Assembly announced yesterday (February 26) the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would guarantee equal rights for women in New York State.
While the New York State constitution does provide equal rights on the basis of race, color, creed and religion, it does not currently include protections on the basis of sex.
The ERA would amend the Constitution to prohibit the denial of equal rights on the basis of sex. It will also guard against roll backs of women’s rights in health, employment, domestic violence and education.
In order to become law, the ERA will now need to pass through the State Senate and be approved by the people of New York State via referendum in an election.
