US Senator Chuck Schumer announced nearly $670 million in federal funding will be received by New York to provide affordable high-speed internet to locations in the state that currently have no broadband service.
The money was included as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act and is the largest investment in broadband internet in New York’s history. According to a report from State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, federal investments to expand internet access have proven extremely effective at bridging the gap for broadband in New York.
From 2019 to 2021, the number of New Yorkers earning less than $20,000 with a subscription to broadband has gone up from 64% to 76%, an increase of 1.3 million New York households in recent years.
