NY Statewide Order Allows Pharmacists to Administer RSV Vax to Adults 60 and Older

The New York State Department of Health’s State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has issued a statewide standing order allowing pharmacists in New York State to administer RSV vaccination to adults 60 years and older.

This age group is of particular priority as older adults are vulnerable to complications from RSV. They’re encouraged to get the vaccine now, as respiratory viruses typically spread in the fall and winter seasons. Adding RSV to the list of vaccinations pharmacists are allowed to administer will expand access to the vaccine and improve outcomes for vaccinated individuals exposed to the virus.

RSV is a highly contagious virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can be serious, especially in infants and older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RSV leads to approximately 60,000-120,000 hospitalizations and 6,000-10,000 deaths among adults age 65 and older.
