NY Senator Gillibrand Presents Legislation to Increase Social Security Benefits for Senior Citizens

Today Senator Kirsten Gillibrand unveiled the Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act, an initiative aimed at enhancing Social Security benefits for seniors.

Recognizing the escalating cost of healthcare, Gillibrand’s legislation proposes a modification to the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) calculation, ensuring that benefits will adequately reflect the true expenses faced by older Americans. By utilizing the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) rather than the traditional CPI-W, which prioritizes healthcare costs, the bill aims to provide a more accurate representation of seniors’ cost of living.

Senator Gillibrand emphasized the importance of safeguarding Social Security as a vital lifeline for seniors, asserting that the bill aims to alleviate financial strain and enable retirees to enjoy a more comfortable retirement experience.

The Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act has gained the support of Senators Bob Casey, Richard Blumenthal, Peter Welch, John Fetterman, and Bernie Sanders.
