NY DMV Says You Should Check Your Vehicle For Any Recalls

This week is Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, says the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV says this week highlights how motorists should check to see if their vehicle has any safety recalls and schedule them to be repaired. The DMV added recalls can affect almost every part of your vehicle, from potentially deadly airbags made by Takata to vehicle tires and child car seats.

“Vehicle Safety Recalls Week is a great reminder to check whether there are repairs needed on your vehicle and its safety features,” said Mark J.F. Schroeder, DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. “It only takes a couple of minutes to check for recalls, but doing so can potentially save your life or the lives of others on the road.”

According to data provided by the DMV, 1 in 5 cars on the road in 2024 had an open recall, with 2 million vehicles having a recall in the state. Vehicles with the most recalls were light trucks with 24% requiring repair work. This was followed by minivans at 23% and cars at 21% having recalls.

A tool is available online through the DMV’s website to help motorists identify open recalls and get information on how to fix or replace the affected part(s) free of charge. A license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is required. The VIN may be found on the driver’s side doorjamb, windshield or on your registration and insurance card.
