NY Department of Ag & Markets Launching New Webinar on Work Safety During Heat

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets announced they have partnered with the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) to host a new web seminar for farm owners and workers to prevent heat illnesses.

NYCAMH’s webinar will take place on Thursday, August 1st from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., and will include presentations from Cornell University’s Workforce Development Program, OSHA, and the NYCAMH themselves. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), extreme heat incidents are rising alongside temperatures across the country, which is projected to get worse as the summer goes on.

“The frequency of extreme heat events in our state is increasing, which puts workers at greater risk of heat-related illness,” said NYCAMH Deputy Director Dr. Erika Scott. “We want to ensure the agricultural industry has access to the latest updates on the newly proposed federal heat rule along with practical heat-illness prevention strategies.”

The webinar will include proposed OSHA rules and workforce considerations, how to recognize the signs of heat illness and how to provide first aid, and upcoming heat standards. A question-and-answer session will be available at the end of the event.
