NY December Unemployment Rate Drops Slightly

The New York State Department of Labor Tuesday released preliminary local area unemployment rates for December 2016.

The rate of unemployment in Cortland County was 5.8%, up .6% from November, and steady from a year ago.

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

From December 2015 to December 2016, the State’s private sector job count increased by 98,200.

In December 2016, the number of private sector jobs in the State was 7,963,900.

The State’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers, which is conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In addition, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.1% to 4.9% in December 2016.

The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in December 2016 include:
  • Tompkins County (3.4%)
  • Columbia County (3.6%)
  • Nassau County (3.6%)
  • Albany County (3.8%)
  • Putnam County (3.8%)
  • Saratoga County (3.8%)
  • Dutchess County (3.9%)
  • New York County (3.9%)
  • Queens County (3.9%)
  • Rockland County (3.9%)
