NWS Warns of Hazardous Snow Squalls For Today
The National Weather Service in Binghamton (NWS) says with an approaching arctic front, the potential for snow squalls late Thursday morning into the afternoon hours is likely. According to the NWS, the front will have snow showers with possible squalls throughout a majority of the day. Following the front will be bitterly cold temperatures with wind chills at or below zero degrees Friday morning.
The NWS says if your mobile device or an alert is aired on the radio, or tv of an approaching snow squall, they recommend you delay your travels until it has passed. In the event you cannot avoid an approaching snow squall while on the road, the NWS says you should slow down, and turn on your headlights (hazards if allowed).
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a snow squall is a brief period of intense snowfall and wind that leads to whiteout conditions, zero visibility, and possible flash freezes. Snow Squalls are not long lasting however, typically lasting between 30 and 60 minutes max, but retain their intensity during the entire time.
