Number of Non-Farm Jobs in County Increases by 4.2% Year-Over-Year
The New York State Department of Labor says preliminary numbers show the number of private sector jobs in the state had increased for the month of January by 14,500 jobs. The number of jobs added year-over-year for the state was 155,400, or 1.9%. The state unemployment rate remained unchanged for January ‘25 at 4.4%.
For Cortland County, year-over-year growth for nonfarm jobs in the county was at a 4.2% increase. The Department of Labor (DOL) reports Cortland County in January 2025 had 17,400 nonfarm jobs, an increase of 700 jobs when compared to January 2024, which was at 16,700.
The increase in nonfarm jobs is good news for Cortland County, which was flagged by the DOL as one of nine counties that had been losing nonfarm jobs between 2023 to 2024. The county is expected to see continued job growth with the planned expansion of Byrne Hollow Crossing in Cortlandville. The facility looks to add an additional 280 new jobs once all three expansion phases are completed.
