No Injuries Following 2nd Alarm Fire at Residence on Route 41 in Homer

Around 8:50pm Wednesday night, Homer Fire was dispatched for a reported structure fire in a garage at 5459 Route 41 in the Town of Homer. Cortland County 9-1-1 reported the garage was detached from the nearby residence. However, law enforcement arriving on scene confirmed a working fire with the fire spreading to the rear of the residence. County 9-1-1 also reported receiving multiple calls of the fire.

As a result, Homer Fire issued a 2nd-Alarm, All-Hands fire to bring in additional resources to the scene. Fire Departments from Cortlandville, McGraw, Truxton with their Chief, Spafford, & Preble, were requested to the scene, 1st Assistant Chief for Homer Fire, Jeremey Barber told X101 News. Several other departments also provided standby coverage.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire, with fire found in the ceiling and between walls of the residence. Homer Fire says the garage is considered a total loss and the home sustained damage in the rear. Barber added the garage was about 10 to 15 feet from the residence.

No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called in to assist the family.

Route 41 was shut down for a few hours between Brake Hill Road and Route 41a while firefighters worked. The roadway would later re-open to single-lane traffic until units cleared the scene in the early morning hours of Thursday.

State Fire is investigating the cause of the fire.
