No Back in Time for This Man: Arrested for Catalytic Converter Theft

The City of Cortland Police Department responded to a call near the area of 168 Homer Ave on Sunday, September 18th around 2 in the morning. The caller stated to officials that he could hear something suspicious, like metal being cut.




When officers arrived in the area they found Zackery D. Burlingame of Cortland, NY in the parking lot. Officer’s further conducted their investigation and located a vehicle with its catalytic converter halfway cut off of the vehicle and a Sawzall tool and blades laying on the ground by said vehicle.

Once finishing their investigation officers arrested Burlingame and charged him with Criminal Mischief 3rd, a felony, and Attempted Grand Larceny 4th, a misdemeanor.

He was sent to Cortland County Jail with no bail.

The City of Cortland Police Department noted in their release that the caller who reported this incident did an outstanding job with his description and calling the police.

Due to their value, catalytic converter thefts are on the rise again. The City of Cortland Police reminds all residents, if you see something or hear something suspicious around parking lots and parked vehicles to contact police immediately.
