New Yorkers Encouraged to Report Turkey Sightings During August Survey
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is encouraging citizens to partake in the State’s annual wild turkey survey this summer.
Throughout the month of August, participants are encouraged to document the date, location, age and sex of wild turkeys using an online form that can be filled out on a smartphone, computer, or tablet. The DEC uses the survey to help biologists manage wild turkey populations across the state.
“DEC’s Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey is a great opportunity for people to participate in wildlife science,” Interim DEC Commissioner Sean Mahar said. “Anyone with internet access can participate, simply by reporting their observations while exploring the outdoors.”
The Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey represents just one of many citizen and community science opportunities that exist between the public and DEC. People can go enjoy their summer while providing critical data that can be used to manage wildlife species.
