Jack Eves: [00:00:00] X 1 0 1, always classic Jack in the studio. Joining me once again for this holiday weekend special interview is Public Information Officer with New York State Police Troop c Aga Tinker. Trooper Tinker, thank you again and it’s nice speaking to you a lot. Now,

Aga Tinker: of course, thanks for having me, it’s great we get to put out some educational stuff,

Jack Eves: education, important information too.

Yeah. ‘

Aga Tinker: cause sometimes, people don’t know, so let, let’s put out the education so that they know, okay, this isn’t something that I should be doing. At least maybe. Give it a second thought.

Jack Eves: Yes. Yes. With Thanksgiving coming up quick now obviously we recently spoke about the click it or ticket campaign, there’s also another big campaign, especially with Thanksgiving.

A lot of family get togethers, friends and all that is the stop. Which is the stop DWI campaign as well as the speed enforcement initiative.

Aga Tinker: There’s gonna be a lot of people on the roads traveling. Looking ahead at the weather. It, it can change. We live in New York. Yeah.

We know it can change, it could be rain, it could be snow, it could be sunny day, all

Jack Eves: within [00:01:00] five minutes.

Aga Tinker: Exactly. Within five minutes or within the counties. You drive to certain parts of the county, you’re like, why is it snowing here? But it wasn’t snowing there. We, we are gonna have more people on the roads making sure that, everyone’s following. The rules of the road and that everyone can get to their destination safely. So there’ll be troopers out looking for people that are speeding. People that may be, impaired, whether they’ve been drinking a little bit too much or maybe they’ve just partook, partook

some recreational drugs even prescription drugs, all of that is dangerous to get the behind the wheel after doing that.

Jack Eves: Exactly. To highlight too, with, a lot of people traveling, AAA recently said too, they’re expecting 73 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles this year.

So the roadways are definitely gonna be busy. Weather is a factor it’s always good to make sure you’re safe, especially keeping an eye out. As you said with prescription drugs too. ’cause that’s, sometimes people don’t think that can be an effect, when you’re driving on the road.

Aga Tinker: Read, read the labels.

Often the pharmacies are pretty good, letting us know. Read the labels if you feel like, eh, maybe I shouldn’t drive, maybe I’m okay.

Jack Eves: [00:02:00] Don’t risk it. Don’t risk

Aga Tinker: it. That’sThat’s The best way to put it.

Jack Eves: Yes. A lot of people saythe Wednesday before Thanksgiving is a big drinking day.

It’s a big day for bars and all of that. ‘ ’causepeople Are trying to getting kicked outta the house as some family members are probably getting ready to cook dinner for the Thanksgiving the next day. And it’s big to. A designated driver, but alsothere’s a lot of those apps to Uber or Lyft.

They can always get a safe, wide home.

Aga Tinker: Stay if you’re at a house party, if you can possibly stay at that person’s house, do that. If you’re a friend of someone that you see that’s had too much. Take away their keys. I know that’s not beingpeople that’s, sometimes people frown upon that or make fun of you for that, but

be a good friend and take away that person’s keys. Don’t get behind the wheel. Don’t let somebody else get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking too muchpartook in some kind of recreational drugs.

Jack Eves: Exactly. ’cause they could get hurt behind the wheel. Or even worse, they could hurt someone else who was on the road.

Aga Tinker: Oftentimes, sadly, we see more people that. Are impaired that they don’t get as injured as someone else. And sometimesit’s caused injuries, [00:03:00] serious injuries, or death. That’s now something that you have to live with. So just don’t risk it. Don’t get behind the wheel.

Jack Eves: Don’t risk it.

Don’t get behind the wheel. Obviously the penalties too are steep for a DWI offense, especially if you’re a repeat offender.

Aga Tinker: It’s thousands of dollars, that it would cost between attorney fees, court appearances, maybe it may land you in jail. On top of that, you could possibly lose your license.

And again, higher fees with. The insurance, they, they see that kind of stuff and you’re, you’re a risk for them. So your insurance is gonna go up or your insurance may drop you what’s, it’s not, it’s not worth it. So just always plan a, a safe way to, to get home

Jack Eves: safe. Way to get home. Everyone, especially, we’re gonna be looking at this as now we’re in full swing for the holiday season.

People want to celebrate, get together it’s still, always have a plan to make sure you either get home safely or you have a safe place to stay.

Aga Tinker: Absolutely. It’s 100% preventable. So. Make sure, there’s, there’s the, the statistics always, they say that one person every 39 minutes dies [00:04:00] from an alcohol related crash.

That’s crazy

Jack Eves: that that’s, that’s crazy to think. Just 39 minutes. Well, trooper Tinker, thank you so much as always for coming in. Again, the stop, DWI, as well as the Speed Enforcement Initiative is going on from the 26th through the 30th. That’s the Thanksgiving holiday. Just make sure you have a plan, and if you’re gonna go out to drink, reuse, recreation, and double check your prescriptions as well.

Trooper Tinker, is there anything else you’d like to add? No,

Aga Tinker: that’s right. Just make sure you, you, like you said, have a plan and don’t risk it.

Jack Eves: Don’t risk it all. Thank you again, as always for coming in and have a happy Thanksgiving to you.

Aga Tinker: You as well. And to all your listeners.

Jack Eves: For X 1 0 1, I’m Jack Eaves.
