New York Governor Signs Legislation Encouraging Safer Use of Lithium-Ion Batteries
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the signing of a legislative package on Thursday to raise awareness about safely using E-Bikes and other devices powered by lithium-ion-batteries.
The package included eight bills that regulate these devices. It includes prohibiting the sale of lithium-ion devices that are not up to manufacturing standards, requires first responders to train for incidents involving the batteries, and requires mopeds to be registered by dealers at the point of sale. Also included in the package are bills requiring operating manuals, red tags on chargers, and requiring reports on accidents and incidents that occur while using E-Bikes and E-Scooters.
“These are important steps to keep New Yorkers safe,” said DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Mark J.F. Schroeder. “Before buying an e-bike, familiarize yourself with everything you need to do to maintain it safely and prevent fires.”
As e-bikes continue to surge in popularity, Governor Hochul hopes that these new laws build on the priority of keeping New Yorkers safe, whether that’s on or off the road. New Yorkers are encouraged to make smart choices when buying these products and conduct safe practices to keep these lithium-ion devices from causing harm.
