The New York State Department of Transportation is reminding all motorists that moving over is everyone’s responsibility and to pay attention to the road ahead and move over for emergency vehicles, those working on the road, and disabled vehicles.

As soon as you see lights ahead of you or vests or reflectors, check the traffic around you, slow down and move over if it is safe to do so. The NYS Move Over Law applies to both sides of the road and not just the shoulder on the right.

Failure to move over first time offenses can result in a fine up to $150. A second offense within 18 months of the first offense could lead to a fine of up to $300. Then, a third offense within the same timeframe can be a fine of up to $450.
