Businesses who sell gift cards within the state are being reminded by the state of a new law that is effective today, designated to protect consumers from potential gift card scams.
The new law requires a notice to be placed at or near where any business sells gift cards or gift certificates to warn of potential scams.
Recently, scams that request gift cards as payments have been increasing. The scam has become popular as the funds are nearly impossible to trace by police. A report from the Federal Trade Commission shows last year, nearly 65,000 consumers had filed a complaint about gift card scams with an estimated loss of $228.3 million dollars.
