New Cancer Center at GCMC gets First County Approvals

Local News

A brand-new $10.6M cancer center planned at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center took another step forward last week, getting an official recommendation by the county planning board at their meeting on Wednesday (January 15).

The project now heads to the city planning commission for consideration at their meeting this Wednesday, January 22, before being taken to the city zoning board on February 10.

Planned for construction is a 21-foot-tall, nearly 11,000 square-foot building at the corner of West Main and Loope streets, which will require the demolition of two Guthrie-owned houses on Loope Street and a major overhaul of the hospital’s west parking lot.

Several changes are also proposed to the traffic pattern and location of entrances in the immediate area, which can’t begin until they’re approved at additional county and city meetings in the future.

Altogether, breaking ground on construction isn’t expected for at least another six months.

In related news, it was announced Friday (January 17) that Radiation Oncology Services, PC has joined the Guthrie Medical Group and is now “Guthrie Cortland Radiation Oncology.”

Patients will see the same staff with no disruption in care and no changes to the services offered or health plans accepted.

Dr. Michael Fallon will remain with the group and said he looks “forward to participating in the development of Guthrie’s new cancer center…Joining with Guthrie will provide me with exceptional healthcare resources. I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Guthrie’s surgical specialists and radiation oncology colleagues, Dr. Omar Yumen, Dr. Thomas Gergel and Dr. Charles Collier.”

“Guthrie looks forward to enhancing the care provided to patients in the community and is excited to bring long-anticipated expansion of cancer services to Cortland,” said Dr. Philip Lowry, Co-Director, Oncology Service Line at Guthrie. “Radiation Oncology Services, PC is a successful, well-regarded practice in the Cortland community. As Guthrie moves forward with its plans for a new cancer center, the inclusion of Dr. Fallon’s practice will further enhance and strengthen the care provided to patients, enabling them to receive care close to home.”
