Neal Schon Says Classic Santana Reunion Sessions Are Wrapping Up This Week

Music News

Journey guitarist Neal Schon revealed on Facebook that the classic early-’70s Santana lineup is putting the finishing touches on its reunion album — with a tour also in the works. Ultimate Classic Rock reported Schon posted: “We are wrapping up Santana IV this week. Sounds amazing!” He went on to chat with fans on the page, adding, “This record is going to take over the world. I just hope management gets it together for us to tour together as I WILL Tour with Carlos (Santana) either way. It’s way too happening to not. World domination once again.”

Back in 2013, Carlos Santana first revealed that plans were underway for a new album featuring himself, Schon, keyboardist Gregg Rolie, percussionist Mike Carabello, and drummer Michael Shrieve. Founding bassist David Brown died in 2000 and longtime percussionist Jose “Chepito” Areas, who performed with the band through 1980, has yet to be confirmed for the reunion album.

Neal Schon joined the original lineup in 1971 at age 17 in time for that year’s Santana III, after which Carabello and Brown quit. After 1972’s Caravanserai, Schon and Rolie left to form Journey. The new, unnamed album will mark the first time the core members have recorded together in 43 years.

When recording plans were still being solidified, Neal Schon spoke to Noise 11 about the type of album he wants to make with Santana: “I really feel that if we compile the material — or, Carlos comes up with the material — whatever he wants to do, we can go in and knock it out relatively painlessly and keep it inspired and not too rehashed, or too thought out. I feel that I’ll make it work.”

There has still been no formal announcement regarding the tentatively titled Santana IV album.

Journey will next perform on April 29th at Las Vegas’ the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Santana will kick off its next Las Vegas run on May 20th at the House Of Blues.

Gregg Rolie’s next show is set for July 11th in Windsor, Ontario at Blues Fest International at the Riverfront Festival Plaza.
