NBC Airing All-Star Elvis Presley Tribute Next Month

Music News

On February 17th, The “King of Rock n’ Roll” Elvis Presley will be saluted on NBC’s Elvis All-Star Tribute. The show, hosted by Blake Shelton, will feature performances by John Fogerty, Mac Davis, Josh Groban, Adam Lambert, John Legend, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, Darius Rucker, Ed Sheeran, Yolanda Adams, Little Big Town, Shawn Mendes, and others.

The two-hour special pays tribute to Elvis Presley’s groundbreaking ’68 Comeback Special by “recreating the iconic night with musical performances, a showcase of rare footage and interviews with Priscilla Presley and Steve Binder, the director of the original special, plus a special appearance from Lisa Marie Presley.”

Just prior to the show airing, on February 15th The Best Of the ’68 Comeback Special, the new companion album to NBC’s Elvis All-Star Tribute will be released. According to the press release, “The Best of The ’68 Comeback Special comprises the Elvis recordings and performances that inspired the upcoming tribute and showcases a new version of the legendary closing number, ‘If I Can Dream,’ as heard in the new special — featuring Elvis’ original vocals alongside new performances by Carrie Underwood, Shawn Mendes, Post Malone, Darius Rucker and Blake Shelton.

The album features 15 remastered Elvis performances from the ‘stand-up’ and ‘sit-down’ shows filmed for the ’68 broadcast, plus three original studio recordings to represent songs that appear in the new special.

Original “Memphis Mafia” member Jerry Schilling — who now serves as the president of the Beach Boys’ Brother Records’ Inc. — proved to be perhaps Elvis’ truest friend, told us that friendship aside — his love of Elvis as a cutting edge rock performer never diminished: “First of all, I thought he was at his greatest in ’56 — and I loved him in ’54. I loved him untamed in the beginning of ’56 on the Dorsey (Brothers) Show because he was such a rebel — and he was like a musical James Dean, if you will. And I was drawn to that. And then, he comes back with the ’68 ‘comeback special’ and Vegas shows, and I realized he still had some of that rawness that he had developed to a much higher degree.”
