National Weather Service Warns of Significant Snowfall For Sunday – Winter Storm Watch Issued
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton has issued a Winter Storm Watch in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday, January 25, until 7 p.m. Monday, January 26. The NWS is warning of heavy, widespread snow, with totals likely to exceed 7 inches throughout the region.
Snowfall rates are expected to exceed 1 inch per hour at times and will make travel extremely difficult from Sunday through Monday, the NWS warns. As of a 5:30 a.m. update on Thursday, January 22, the NWS in Binghamton says there is a 70% chance the Cortland area will receive 6 inches or more of snow. The chance of receiving 12 inches or more currently stands at 50%.

Currently, the heaviest snowfall is expected to be from the Twin Tiers southward, but the NWS warns further adjustments to the storm track is likely as it gets closer.
“Now is the time to prepare for the very cold temperatures, wind chills (Friday night/Saturday) and this potential significant winter storm (Saturday night, Sunday & Monday AM). In the coming days be sure you have enough gas for your vehicles and snow removal equipment. Be sure you have enough food and water on hand, be sure to refill prescriptions, and consider postponing or changing travel plans if necessary (away from the late Saturday night, Sunday, Sunday night period).”
