The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton has issued a Flood Warning for the Tioughnioga & Otselic Rivers in Cortland County after significant rainfall Sunday morning and afternoon. The Flood Warning is in effect through tomorrow afternoon for the Tioughnioga River and until this afternoon for the Otselic River.
According to the NWS, rainfall today early Sunday afternoon showed eastern portions of the county receiving up to 3 and a half inches of rainfall. For the Cortland and Homer area, rainfall totals were between 1 and 1 and a half inches. The Tioughnioga River is expected to reach its flood stage in Cortland this morning, estimated to rise to 8.1 feet; the flood stage is at 8 feet.
The Tioughnioga is expected to fall below the flood stage by this afternoon.
The Otselic River in Cincinnatus is predicted to have minor flooding occur through this afternoon. On Sunday, the NWS says the river rose to 9.5 feet leading to flooding in basements and yards in Cincinnatus, particularly on Deer Path Lane and Lower Cincinnatus Road. The river crested yesterday evening and has fallen back below its flood stage (9 feet) since midnight.
The NWS reminds motorists to turn around, don’t drown when encountering a flooded roadway. They added most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
