Months of October, November, and December Considered Peak Months For Animal-Related Crashes Says AAA
Drivers in the state are being asked by AAA to buckle up and be extra cautious for animals in the roadway this fall season. AAA says the months of October, November, and December are considered the peak months within New York for animal crashes, mainly deer-related.
Animal-related crashes are the 5th most common factor in an automobile crash. Crashes with driver inattention or distraction, passing/lane changing/improper use, following too closely, and failing to yield to right of way come before animal-crashes.
“There were 35,481 animal-related crashes statewide in 2023, according to preliminary data by the Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research (ITSMR) – that’s equivalent to one animal-related crash every 15 minutes. Of the 35,481 crashes, there were 1,547 crashes that resulted in injury and 9 that resulted in death.”
AAA said in a release.
AAA says animal-related crashes involving deer often occur during the evening hours, especially around sunset. Times when out on the road to be extra alert are between 5 and 7pm after the clocks turn back this weekend.
Tips to avoid or mitigate a deer crash are to scan the roadway, especially the shoulders of the road. Deer are also likely to be traveling in herds. Obey the posted speed limit, keeping your speed down allows you more time to respond to unexpected animal movement on or near the roadway. If you cannot avoid a collision, apply brakes firmly and remain in your lane. Swerving to avoid an animal usually results in a more serious crash.
