Michael Broughton Runs For Homer Town Board
Michael Broughton is running for Homer Town Board. He never planned on getting involved in politics, but thinks residents deserve a more open and transparent government, he said. If elected, a top priority of his would be adhering to the New York Open Meeting Laws, meaning the Board would post agendas well before the meetings, and upload the minutes shortly after.
“People shouldn’t have to dig or wait weeks to know what the Town Board’s doing,” Broughton said. “If we can make that information easy to find, that establishes trust and accountability.”
Broughton would also have the meetings live-streamed and then archived online. Over the past year, he has filmed and uploaded Town Board meetings to Youtube.
“I think the Town Board should reflect all kinds of people who live here, and not just one group,” Broughton said. “Right now, it’s entirely made up of local business owners, and I think that’s a really important perspective, but it’s not the only one. I want to bring an independent voice.”
It’s extra important the Board represents a diverse group of residents because of the comprehensive plan being updated next year, he said.
“What’s also concerning to me is that my opponents haven’t publicly campaigned or shared what they hope to do if elected,” he said. “They’re running on the slogan of, ‘We’ve got this,’ but we don’t know what ‘this’ is.”
