Meet the Candidates: NYS Senate District 51 (audio)

Local News, On Demand, What We're Talking About

WXHC spoke with candidates for New York State Senatorial District 51 in the coming General Election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3:

The open seat comes as a result of the retiring State Senator James Seward, who announced in January that his current 17th term in office would be his last.

Three names are on the ballot including a Republican, a Democrat and a Libertarian.

On the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines is business owner and Otsego County Legislator Peter Oberacker, who has Seward’s backing in the race. A Schenevus native, Oberacker founded Form Tech Solutions and serves as a member of the Otsego County Board of Representatives.

Democrat Jim Barber, of Middleburgh, is a fifth-generation farmer and former executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency in New York. He also served two years as special assistant to the commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets.

A rare third-party candidate threw his name in the race, namely Tim O’Connor, of Maryland, NY — he also owns a business, TMO Construction, and is a lifelong resident of Central New York.

New York’s 51st State Senate District covers all of Schoharie, Otsego, and Cortland Counties, along with parts of Tompkins, Herkimer, Chenango, Cayuga, Delaware, and Ulster Counties.
