The State Labor Department reports the March unemployment rate in Cortland County dipped to 7.2%, down from 7.6% in February.
However, compared to March of 2017, the rate is up 7-tenths of a percent over the year.
Labor Department Analyst Karen Scalzo-Knapik says the rate is improving in 2018. “That was a little bit down from the February 2018 level of 7.6%,” said Scalzo-Knapik. “We have seen a little bit of decline when we look at this year, 2018 from January to February to March. It’s been declining a little bit but we still are above year ago levels.”
Cortland’s rate is 53rd among the 62 counties.
“A lot of our counties in our region have experienced the same type of trends overall that Cortland County has, in terms of some improvement of the unemployment rate over the month, from February to March, yet, still seeing some increases over the year,” said Scalzo-Knapik.
The Central New York Region’s average unemployment rate of 5.8% is about middle of the pack among regions in our state.
