Marathon Central Schools Announces Early Dismissal for Solar Eclipse

In a letter to parents, Marathon Central Schools Superintendent, Andy Buchsbaum, informed parents and guardians of a change in the district schedule with the addition of an early dismissal on Monday, April 8th.

The early dismissal will have students at Appleby Elementary dismiss at noon and the Jr. and Sr. High School dismissing at 12:15pm. Superintendent Buchsbaum cited the reasoning for the early dismissal as the area will be experiencing a solar eclipse on that day.

“Proactive planning for this day started last school year between local superintendents, but in recent months Regional Emergency Management Offices have joined the discussion. Because our region is very close to the path of totality, there is a concern amongst school districts regarding the timing of this event.” Buchsbaum said in the letter.

The solar eclipse taking place on April 8th, is expected to occur during the schools regular dismissal time Buchbaum explained when both students and staff would be returning home.

“With an abundance of caution the Marathon Central School District has decided to dismiss early on this day to ensure everyone has a safe viewing of this celestial event at their homes.”

In addition to the early dismissal, all students will be provided with safety glasses that will allow them to view the eclipse without any harm to their eyes.
