Marathon Area Historical Society Hosting Learning Events on Brigadier General David Brainard
The Marathon Area Historical Society says on Wednesday, February 18 at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and at 7 p.m., will be an opportunity for residents to learn more about Brigadier General, David Brainard, who is best-known as part of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition and subsequent rescue. Brainard grew up in Freetown and later graduated from the State Normal School in Cortland.
The Historical Society noted his work with arctic exploration, as a military leader, and being a purple heart recipient. A documentary video by PBS on the “The Greely Expedition” will take place at the Old Town Hall, the Historical Society says. The video will air at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
