On June 30th around 12:30 in the morning, the City of Cortland Police responded to a complaint of a man waving a knife at bystanders and business patrons on Union Street in the City of Cortland.
Officer’s found 42 year old John M. Rawson on Union St. with the knife still in hand. Rawson refused to put the knife down and ignored commands from the officer’s to cease his actions. When officers began to take him into custody he repeatedly punched an officer in the face multiple times and resisted arrest.
A taser was then deployed to Rawson with multiple officers working to take him into custody. He was arrested and taken to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center for minor injuries. He was charged with disorderly conduct, harassment in the 2nd degree, both violations and obstructing government administration, and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.
Rawson was released on appearance tickets shortly after the incident, he then proceeded to fail to appear in Cortland City Court. An arrest warrant was issued for his re-arrest.
Officer’s rearrested Rawson on August 13th around 4:30 in the morning. He was then arraigned and released again on his own recognizance.
