Around 7 in the morning on April 15th, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to a physical domestic in progress on Trumbulls Corners Road in the Town of Newfield.
Upon arrival, the suspect had already fled the scene. Troopers spoke with the female victim who identified the suspect at 38 year old Richard Marks Jr of Newfield. She also informed police he fled via UTV into a wooded area.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Office began to look for Marks in the wooded area. Police also learned Marks had numerous warrants from prior domestics from the New York State Police, Ithaca Police Department, and Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.
As officers continued to search the wooded area, they visually observed Marks pointing a long gun, later identified as a 12 gauge shotgun, and then discharged two rounds near the officers.
The officers were about 50 yards from where Marks shot the gun. He then began to yell at officers “Come get me, I’m down here.”
Officers called for additional units to the area, with assistance from the Ithaca Police Department and New York Parks Police. Deputies were able to take cover and then set up a perimeter around Mark’s location.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Office were able to locate Marks on Horton Rd in Newfield. He was taken into custody and charged with Menacing a Police Officer, 2 Counts of Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, all Felonies, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th, a Misdemeanor.
He is currently being held on no bail after being arraigned at the Tompkins County Centralized Arraignment Program. He is due in Newfield Town Court at a later date.
