Man Identified in Shootout With Police – Charged With Attempted Murder

State Police have identified the person involved in a shootout with officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office back on January 29th at a residence on Homer Ave. in the City of Cortland. Troopers identified the person as 58 year old Steven R. Burda of Cortland, who they say was in possession of a shotgun.

The Civil Division of the Sheriff’s Office arrived at 171 Homer Ave. early afternoon on Monday, January 29th to serve eviction paperwork to Burda. Officers were met by him inside the apartment building with Burda armed with the shotgun. Officers immediately attempted to deescalate the situation to disarm Burda through less lethal methods of beanbag impact rounds fired by Cortland Police Lieutenant Cheyenne Cute.

State Police say those beanbag rounds were ineffective against Burda who then shot at officers, no officer was struck. Cortland County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Sergeant, Anthony Phelps, fired back at Burda, who was struck in the lower body. After being hit by return fire, medical aid was given to Burda. He was then transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Burda remains at Upstate in stable condition and under guard. State Police have charged Burda with Attempted Murder in the 1st degree. He will be arraigned on the charge following his release State Police say.
