A man from DeRuyter faces charges of enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity.
If convicted, Steven Hathaway could be sent to prison for 10 years to life and a $250,000 fine.
The U.S. Attorney’s office reports that Hathaway participated in sexually explicit conversations online with what he believed was a 12-year old girl.
A request for photos and to meet the girl led to Hathaway buying an iPhone, which investigators say was left near the girl’s home for her to use.
Hathaway was arrested by State Police and Homeland Security at a meetup that was planned for March 23.
He’s being held without bail pending a detention hearing, according to prosecutors.
