Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Shooting Woman in Downtown Cortland

Around 1pm on Friday, December 16th, the City of Cortland Police Department responded to 109 Main Street in Downtown Cortland for a report of a woman shot.

The caller ended up being the victim of the shooting, a 30 year old woman. When officers arrived at the scene they found the victim conscious and alert on the landing area of the stairs on the third floor of the building. The victim had a gunshot wound to her face and neck.

The victim was able to identify the shooter as 37 year old Tyshawn Pittman, who was an acquaintance to the victim and also a resident at 109 main St. Pittman’s whereabouts were unknown to police when finding the victim.

Cortland Police secured the area and established a perimeter outside of Pittman’s apartment. Surrounding buildings were evacuated by police. Officers from the State Police and the Cortland Tactical Response Team assisted city police and conducted a search of the apartment, Pittman was not located inside.

A continued investigation by officers, Pittman was eventually located in an apartment on the third floor of 89 Main St. in the City of Cortland around 7pm. Police used tips from the public, surveillance cameras in the area, and cell phone tracking technology to locate Pittman. Officers were then able to take Pittman into custody and found the handgun that was used in the shooting in the apartment.

Police charged Pittman with Attempted Murder in the 2nd, Assault in the 1st, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd, a Felonies. He was arraigned and remanded to Cortland County Jail with $250,000 dollars cash bail, $500,000 dollars secured bond, or one million dollars bail bond. He is scheduled to reappear in Cortland City Court on December 21st.

The victim in the incident was transported by TLC Ambulance to a trauma center in Syracuse, her injuries are not considered life threatening. She was released from the hospital on the same day, December 16th.

Assisting the City of Cortland Police Department was the NYS Police, Cortland Fire Department, NYSW Railroad Police, TLC Ambulance, Cortland County Sheriff, and the Cortland County District Attorney.
