A major fire erupted at Cortland Chrysler Dodge Jeep on Route 281 in Cortland early Friday morning. Around 3am, the Cortlandville Fire Department responded to the dealership to heavy smoke and flames coming from the auto repair area, located in the rear of the building. The volume of the fire forced firefighters to fight the fire from only the outside of the building.

Cortlandville requested additional for manpower and assistance to battle the flames from Homer, Virgil, Dryden, and McLean Fire Departments. The showroom area of the building sustained heavy smoke damage, but avoided flames as a fire wall between the showroom and auto repair show stopped the fire from spreading.

Route 281 was briefly shut down between Luker Road and McLean Road as crews worked on the fire.

The fire was under control about an hour after the initial response. No injuries were reported during the fire and NY State Fire is currently investigating the cause.

Also assisting the Cortlandville Fire Department was the McGraw and Groton Fire Departments, who provided standby coverage of the Cortlandville Fire District, NYS-DOT, Cortland County Sheriff, and Cortland County Department of Emergency Response and Communications. The New York State DEC Spill Response Team also responded to contain oil from run-off.
