Major Accident Closes Route 281 in Homer Last Friday

A two vehicle crash that occurred late Friday morning, July 29 closed both the northbound and southbound of Route 281 between James Street and Clinton Street in the Village.


Homer Fire, along with Homer Police and TLC Ambulance personnel were dispatched at 10:53 am to the scene at the corner of Bedford Street and 281.

Emergency crews that responded to the scene reported six injured and requested additional ambulances and a call for three helicopters.

Three people were taken to Upstate Hospital with minor injuries. Two others sustained life threatening injuries and were airlifted to Upstate, the third helicopter was not needed.

As of Sunday, July 31 the three with minor injuries have been released from Upstate.

Route 281 reopened around 1pm the same day.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.

Assisting the Homer Police Department was Homer Fire Department, Cortland County Sheriff, TLC Ambulance, Dryden Ambulance, Marcellus Ambulance, NY Department of Transportation.

The two helicopters were operated by LifeNet and Mercy Flight.
