The League of Women Voters will host the first of two “Meet the Candidates” forums on Saturday, September 28, where the public is invited to hear city of Cortland legislative candidates’ views on a range of issues.
That will take place from 10 a.m. – noon at the Cortland Elks Lodge $748 on Groton Avenue.
Participating in the discussion will be the candidates running for the city of Cortland’s 2nd, 5th, and 6th legislative districts:
- LD 2: (Incumbent) Beau Harbin (D) and his challenger Thomas Larson (R)
- LD 5: Susan Wilson (D) and Laurie Comfort (R)
- LD 6 (Incumbent) Richard Stock (D) and his challenger Paul Lorenzo (R).
Each forum will be moderated by the LWVCC, a non-partisan organization that promotes participation of citizens in government and does not support any political party or candidate. They will only include candidates for contested offices.
Participants have been requested by the LWVCC to sign their agreement to its forum guidelines:
-Candidates make timed opening and closing statements, then respond to questions posed by the audience as well as the moderator.
-To give the audience time to formulate questions, the moderator will start with question submitted in advance by members of the Women’s Coalition.
-Representatives from the Republican and Democratic parties screen audience questions only to avoid duplication and offensive content.
A second forum featuring candidates for other contested local offices is set for October 19.
Stay tuned for more information on that, which is expected in the coming weeks.
