Look Twice & Save a Life – May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
The month of May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, says AAA. The organization is reminding both motorists and bikers to utilize key safety tips when out on the road as the nicer weather will have an increase in motorcyclists.
AAA though says fatal motorcycle crashes have been on the rise. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 6,335 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in 2023. It is the highest year in fatal crashes since 1975. In 2022, 6,218 died in crashes, an increase of 1.8% for 2023. NHTSA also says fatal motorcycle crashes account for 15% of all crashes in 2023.
“As an advocate for traffic safety, AAA hopes to reduce crashes and keep the rest of the spring and summer safe for all roadway users,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations at AAA Western and Central New York. “Everyone can do their part to safely share the road.”
Motorcycles registered within the country has also risen over the past decade from 4.3 million in 2002 to 8.8 million in 2023.
Key safety tips for motorists to remember when out driving is to check their mirrors for motorcycles before entering or leaving lanes of traffic at intersections. Remember the phrase “Look Twice, Safe a Life.” Always signal before changing lanes, increase following distance if behind a motorcycle, and never share a lane with a motorcycle.
Motorcyclists are reminded prior to going out to check their tire pressure and tread. Make sure their brakes, headlights, and signals are all working, secure cargo, and always to ride with a helmet.
AAA also recommends keeping yourself visible. You can do this by riding with your light on, wearing bright colors or reflective clothing/tape, and position yourself where motorists can see you.
