Update 11:15 a.m. 3/5/2026: Sheriff Osborne says Joanne Washburn has been located safe in the Town of Ulysses
Original Story:
Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne says his office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, is searching for a 10-year-old girl reported missing Thursday morning.
According to Osborne, deputies responded to the 5000 block of Cold Springs Road in Ulysses around 6:30 a.m. on March 5 for a report of a missing child. The girl, identified as Joanne Washburn, was discovered missing by her parents around 6:00 a.m.
Her parents told law enforcement the last time they saw Joanne was around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Osborne said Joanne is believed to be wearing a blue jacket and gray-and-blue boots, and may be carrying a purple backpack with yellow strings.
Authorities say Joanne did not arrive at school in Trumansburg Thursday morning. A witness also reported possibly seeing a child matching Joanne’s description walking along Trumansburg Road around 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
Law enforcement agencies continue to search the area.
Anyone with information about Joanne’s whereabouts, or who believes they may have seen her, is asked to contact the Tompkins County 9-1-1 Center at (607) 272-2444.
“We have received several calls/comments regarding an Amber Alert. This case does not yet qualify for an Amber Alert. We have made every notification to all resources available to us.” Osborne said in an update.
