The State Attorney General’s office found at least one used car dealer in Cortland, Cortland Used Cars, among 104 across the state that sold used cars with unrepaired safety recalls.
Investigators say only a tiny fraction of the people who bought those cars were ever told of the problems.
Problems such as unintended acceleration, airbag problems, brake loss, or steering loss.
Most buyers assume dealers fix the problems, but the A-G’s office found that was far from the case, and there is no federal law forcing the repairs and disclosure requirements are not clear.
Consumers who purchased vehicles after January 1, 2016, who believe they have possibly unrepaired safety recalls should contact the Attorney General’s office at 1-800-771-7755 or via web form at https://ag.ny.gov/complaint-forms.
Consumers can check the recall status of your vehicle by entering its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
