Today is Veteran’s Day, a day to be observed to celebrate the service of all US military veterans. Throughout Cortland County a number of events are taking place to honor those who have served our country.
A full list of events can be found below:
- Cortland Police Department Veteran’s Day Breakfast. Held at the Cortland Elks Lodge 748 located at 9 Groton Ave in the City of Cortland. The Cortland Police Dept. is hosting a breakfast at the Cortland Elk Lodge. Veterans and their guests (limit up to one guest) eat free. Children also with a veteran eat free. For all others it’s $7.50 per meal.
- Homer American Legion Veterans Day Dinner. Held at the Legion located at 63 S Main St. Homer. Annual Chicken & Biscuit Dinner. Meals are $10 for adults and Veterans eat free.
- Veterans Day Watchfire. Held at the CNY Living History Center located at 4386 US-11, Cortland. A brief ceremony begins at 5:30pm and will be followed by lighting the fire at 6:00 p.m. to respectfully burn retired and tattered American Flags. Refreshments will be served. Honor our veterans, learn about the role of the military watchfire, and join in song and fellowship on this important day. Tours of the CNY Living History Center Museums (Brockway, Homeville, Tractors of Yesteryear) are free for veterans before the watchfire, from 1-4 p.m. on Veterans Day.
Saturday:
- Veterans Day Ceremony. Located at Homer Veterans Police and Fire Memorial at Durkee Park. The gathering is set to take place November 12th 10 AM. It’s being held to honor Homer veterans, police and firefighters who have served the country with bravery and distinction. The public is invited to attend the memorial. Officers of the Homer Police Department and members of the Homer Fire Department are holding the ceremony.
