You may already know as a driver, to stop when you see the red flashing lights on a school bus, but unfortunately, not everyone obeys the law.

The City of Cortland Police Department took part in Operation Safe Stop yesterday, where officers followed behind school buses as they picked up students for school. Officers used both marked and unmarked vehicles on selected bus routes that have a known history of illegal passing complaints.

Additionally, officers were also on board buses. The penalties for not stopping for a school bus include a $250 fine, 5 points on your driving record, and a 60-day license suspension.
