Lake Effect Snow to Hit Central New York Region Through Sunday

The first weekend for the New Year is going to be not only a cold one, but also snowy. The National Weather Service says cold temperatures will return with highs only in the low 20s for this upcoming weekend with lake effect snow likely.

“As the first lake effect storm of the new year moves in, I’ve mobilized our State resources in preparation for significant snowfall and strong winds,” Governor Hochul said. “We are working in close coordination with our local partners, and I encourage everyone to stay alert and monitor their local forecast.”

The heaviest amounts of lake effect now will be in the higher elevations in northern Cortland County and in Onondaga, Oswego, and Oneida Counties. For Cortland County snowfall forecasts range from 4 to 6 inches of snow through Sunday with 8 inches possible in Preble & Scott, according to a report from the National Weather Service.

Motorists should plan extra time when heading to their destination and leave more space between their vehicle and other vehicles on the roadway.
