At a press conference held Thursday at the Tompkins County Legislature Building in Ithaca, Assemblymember Anna Kelles, local officials and citizens of Kelles’ 125th District rejected proposed rate increases by NYSEG.
The utility company released the proposed hikes June 14th, with electric delivery rates increasing 17% each year for the next three years, with a compounding effect of a 62% rise overall. Gas delivery rates are also proposed to go up 5.6%, a total cumulative amount of 17.8% across the same time period. The impact of the proposed increases is exacerbated by management and billing issues at NYSEG, resulting in further headaches for customers.
Area representatives have called on Gov. Hochul to reject NYSEG’s proposal and encouraged their constituents to participate in public hearings and public comment periods.
