A Cortlandville man was arrested yesterday (January 28) after local authorities say he had inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old female, who was known to him.
The joint-agency sex abuse investigation was opened January 21 by members of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department and City Police Department, leading to yesterday’s apprehension of 38-year-old Michael Waite, who resides on Route 11.
Among his charges from the Sheriff’s Department: Two counts of 2nd-degree Rape, one count of 2nd degree Incest and another for 2nd degree Criminal Sex Act: All three “Class D” felonies.
He was also hit with two misdemeanors for Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Class A) and Criminal Sale of Marijuana in the 5th Degree (Class B).
Additionally, City Police handed him a felony and a misdemeanor of their own for Endangering the Welfare of a Child (M) and Disseminating indecent material to a minor (F).
These charges are related to separate accusations that Waite sent sexually explicit messages and photographs to a 14-year-old Cortland girl sometime between January 12-23.
Waite was remanded to the Cortland County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond from the Sheriff.
An additional $250 cash/$1000 bond was posted by city police.
His next court appearance is set for February 7.
