The US Environmental Protection Agency is letting residents know that January is National Radon Action month. The month is designated to highlight the health risks of radon and the importance of testing your home for radon levels.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter into homes through the ground and build up to dangerous levels. Radon is known as the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers with 21,000 deaths each year.
The gas is colorless and odorless, and the only level to know if radon is at high levels is to test your home with a test kit. Test kits are available online or through qualified professionals. The EPA recommends homes with a radon test result of 4 pCi/L or higher to be mitigated with a radon system installed by a professional. No level of radon is considered a safe level.
More information on where to get a radon test kit can be found on the EPA’s website HERE.
