Ithaca police say a baby boy was born early Friday afternoon (July 31) inside the homeless encampment known as “the jungle” in the city.
Officers were called to the area just past Noon and arrived with Tompkins County DSS workers and several other rescue agencies.
Sr. Deputy Chief Vincent Monticello said multiple people inside the jungle fled once police got there.
A perimeter was set up while additional aid responded from New York State Police, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department, Cornell Police Department, Bangs Ambulance and Ithaca Fire Department.
The father of the child was soon located and interviewed on scene, who eventually led officials to the mother and newborn baby boy – he was brought to Cayuga Medical Center for an evaluation.
No other information is being released at this time.
