Around 8:45 am on Tuesday, July 9th, emergency personnel from the Ithaca Police and Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance responded to a reported suicidal person who was hanging from a suspension bridge in the area of Giles Street in the City of Ithaca.

Arriving officers with Ithaca Police to the scene confirmed a person was on the other side of a safety fence and was clinging to the wire mesh. Ithaca Police say their officers immediately began a rapport with the person and as Ithaca Fire arrived at the scene, along with other officers, a plan was developed to save the individual. Both officers and firefighters reached through the wire mesh and clung onto the person, who then tried to break free from officers and firefighters.

The person was held by first responders and prevented them from falling. Rope equipment was set up by police and the wire mesh was cut to attach a harness on the person trying to jump.

Ithaca Police say the person was successfully and safely removed from the bridge and was taken via Bangs Ambulance to the hospital for treatment. IPD says the community member who dialed 9-1-1 should be commended for his compassion and dialog with the person before emergency personnel arrived.

If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health, you can call or text the Suicide Hotline at 9-8-8. If a person is in immediate danger, dial 9-1-1.
